The 90s were an eclectic time of bright colors, soft glows, and endless one-liners.  Culture vulture be aware; the 90s film scene was a surprisingly futile environment. From movies like Fight Club to Reality Bites, it was evident that this decade had plenty to say about the powers that be.

Take an evening to appreciate what came from the unique realm of the 1990s.  Check out a quick summary of some of the best movies from the decade, and start planning your next movie night now.

Cruel Intentions – 1999

Cruel Intentions shows just how evil teenagers can get when they have too much time on their hands.  Two over privileged step-siblings from Manhattan make a bet. Ryan Phillippe’s character, Sabastian, has to get the daughter of his headmaster to sleep with him before the end of the summer break.

Marked with plenty of debauchery and consequences, this 90s landmark is riddled with star power.  Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and even Tara Reid (before her tummy tuck procedure) all play a major role in making Cruel Intentions a 90s classic.

Heavenly Creatures – 1994

Heavenly Creatures is a Peter Jackson (the maker of The Lord of the Rings series) film which tells the true crime story of two teenage girls whose affections shift from best friends to first love, then insanity, and ultimately a homicide.  A young Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey star in this skewed love story for the ages.

Starship Troopers – 1997

Turn your movie night towards humor, and put Starship Troopers on the list of things to watch.  It’s technically a “war” movie, but there’s not much meant to be taken seriously in this comedy film.

Step into the world of sci-fi action films, and experience what it is to be a warrior fighting against giant alien bugs.  Neil Patrick Harris and Denise Richards will make you feel right at home as you laugh your way through the intergalactic war.

The Lion King – 1994

Nineties heartthrob, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, plays the voice of young Simba in the legendary Disney film, The Lion King.  Elton John did a stellar job on the soundtrack for the film, so you’ll personally feel every emotional moment of the film.  Get ready for the release of the live action film this summer, and dig into the beauty of the 1994 version of The Lion King.

Groundhog Day – 1993

Bill Murray makes Groundhog Day unforgettable.  This 1993 comedy/christmas carol movie teaches the age old lesson in humility.  Murray plays a TV personality that simply can’t get enough of himself.

When he meets a special woman, he plays out the same day (Groundhog Day) over and over again until he gets it right.  If you look closely, you’ll also notice a very green Michael Shannon as the husband of the couple who’s stoked over tickets to Wrestlemania.
